With both types of cleats you have to twist your feet to unclip, but the single-release cleats only allow a twist to the side. These cleats allow a few more angles of release. I started out with the SM-SH51 single-release cleats, and fell off my bike a number of times over the course of two years in unusual situations. It is a horrible feeling to find yourself falling and be unable to unclip the whole way down. In one case, I would have been run over if there had been any traffic in the lane next to me. Only caveat is that the instructions warn against over tightening. This is actually pretty hard to do by hand and much more of a risk, in my experience, is under tightening. On my first use, they were pretty tight but not cranked down -- due to my caution after reading the instructions. In fact, this allowed them to move around slightly, loosening them even more and, finally, popping one off stuck in the pedal. It was salvageable but it did scratch up the bottom of my brand new shoes quite a bit and releasing the cleat from the pedal was a big pain. So, don't let the instructions fool you, they need to be really tight. It would be pretty difficult for an average size/strength person to over tighten using a hand wrench. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful Must have cleats!
